Design for my friend George from New Mexico. He let me have complete creative freedom on this pair, all the way up to choosing the subject matter. Tried to stay pretty true to Dia de los Muertos tradition by incorporating the makeup, skull candies, flowers, picture of loved one, etc.
Art Kicks is an entrepreneurial venture between myself (Cam Giblin) and Art Director/friend Evan Schultz. We create custom artwork on canvas Vans shoes with Sharpie. Shoes go for $250 a pair. Each pair receives two coatings of water and stain guard to ensure the designs will last regular wear and tear. The fumes we’ve inhaled working on these shoes will probably kill us. Lung cancer, like Sharpie, is fairly permanent.
(HH: Like the Hindu celebration of Holi, DOTD has also carved out a multi-cultural niche and is celebrated in many parts of the world today. Some holidays just appeal to lots of people and honoring the ancestors is a human inclination.)
