Fancy a glass of sherry in a club car with a library and a big-screen TV, or a soak in a tub in a marble-and-gold bathroom? All that, and more, awaits passengers aboard this storied South African train on its 27-hour, nearly 1,000-mile journey between Cape Town and Pretoria. The trip includes stops at the diamond-mining town of Kimberley and the preserved colonial outpost of Matjiesfontein. Rates range from $1,202 a person for a shared luxury suite in low season, to $2,420 for a private deluxe suite in high season, from Sept. 1 to Nov. 15.
The Grand Daddy Hotel in Cape Town, South Africa looks traditional from ground level. Until you make your way to the roof. The penthouse of the hotel is actually 7 Airstream trailers, 6 of which were imported from the USA. Each Airstream is considered a “room” and sleeps up to 2 people and each once has a whimsical, unique theme. Among the themes, they have the John Lennon & Yoko Ono trailer, the Goldilocks and the 3 Bears trailer and a more traditional Pleasantville trailer.
HH: I could do this for a couple days
(always wondered where the old Airstreams went to die.)
